Prior to joining the firm, William was Managing IP Counsel at National Oilwell Varco (NYSE: NOV), a leading provider of oilfield equipment and services. At NOV, he was responsible for all IP issues with respect to one of the company’s three business segments, including managing a patent portfolio of over a thousand granted and pending applications, negotiating agreements as part of licensing transactions and M&A activity, and overseeing IP litigation.
Before NOV, William was a senior associate at Baker Botts LLP, where his practice focused on all aspects of patent litigation. He prevailed in case-dispositive claim construction disputes, obtained a summary judgment ruling later affirmed by the Federal Circuit, and strategically drove cases toward favorable resolution. He is also a registered patent attorney with experience at the USPTO in both post-grant validity proceedings and prosecuting original patent applications.
William has experience with a broad variety of technologies, including the Wi-Fi and xDSL communication standards, data compression algorithms, passive optical and MPLS networks, DVR software and hardware architecture, telecommunication systems for the deaf and hard of hearing, and virtually all areas of oilfield technology. He has handled cases before the Eastern and Western Districts of Texas, the District of Delaware, the Western District of Wisconsin, the Southern District of New York, the Federal Circuit, and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board.
William holds a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas and a law degree from the University of Chicago, and began his legal career as an appellate clerk to Judge Jerry E. Smith of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. In addition to his legal practice, William serves as Senior Counsel to Koios Pharmaceuticals.
