Joel has represented innovators in patent disputes ranging from cell phone security software and semiconductor design to the use of statins to reduce inflammation.

At McKool Smith, Joel successfully defended Ericsson before the International Trade Commission against Samsung’s allegations that Ericsson’s base stations infringed seven of its patents. He has also authored appellate briefs in the Federal Circuit, the Fifth Circuit, and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeals, and handled cases in the Northern District of California, Southern District of New York, District of South Carolina, and the Northern, Western, and Eastern Districts of Texas.

Joel joined the firm from the Texas Attorney General’s Office, where he was Counsel for Special Litigation. Prior to law school, he developed backend software using Java, SQL, and Ruby on Rails.

Joel began his legal career as a clerk for Judge Jerry Smith of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. He graduated with honors from the University of Chicago Law School, where he was a John M. Olin Fellow in Law and Economics. He received a B.S. in biology and a B.A. in the Plan II Honors Program from the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated with highest honors and was named a Distinguished Scholar. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas and is admitted to practice before the Ninth and Fifth Circuit Courts of Appeals as well as the United States District Courts for the Northern, Western and Eastern Districts of Texas.
